Maxime Cressy hasn’t played many clay matches in his career and it’s for obvious reasons. The American is a big serve who relies on the quickness of the court to win matches which means that clay tennis isn’t quite the type of tennis he enjoys playing.
He has an 18-25 clay record in his career but he can certainly be decent on it because serve and volley can work at times on clay. The key for him in this match, as with any other, is to serve well. If he does that then he’ll be in the match.
His opponent is a tricky player and one that pretty much exclusively plays clay tennis with a lot of experience. Cressy will have to find ways to keep the points short as any long rallies will allow his opponent to drag him across the court and he’s not that of a great mover.
I could see him winning the match but it will be hard as he generally hasn’t play that well this year with a 7-8 record. He can do much better.

Carballes Baena Eyeing Upset
Despite being the better clay player overall Baena is still the lower-ranked player and by definition, his victory would qualify as an upset. They key for him winning the match will be how he handles the serve. If he manages to limit the damage Cressy does with it he’ll be in a very good position.
The Spaniard likes to play longer rallies that allow him to slowly play players out of position before applying the finishing blow. It generally works well unless he faces a player who has more power than him and is well-suited for clay tennis.
Cressy might have power but he certainly isn’t that good on clay so he should have the upper hand here. Avoiding tiebreaks will be huge for him because he doesn’t want to get into a situation where his serve could be the decisive factor.
He’s not having a very good year so far with a 4-9 record but he’ll always be a threat on a clay court. He’s played 18 times more matches on clay than Cressy so far.

I really like Carballes Baena to get the win here because I think he has a good chance to do so. The over looks like a solid option as well.
