World no. 32 Jil Teichmann has been struggling to win on regular basis this season. The 25-year-old lefty, who was a finalist in the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open two years ago, had struggled to win consistently in 2022 as well.
But the Swiss looked a different player on clay last year, and an 11-4 record on the surface reflects that. She was a semifinalist in Madrid and quarterfinalist in Rome and also made it to the fourth round of the French Open.
Can clay begin the turnaround for her in 2023?
She is 9-8 overall this year but just 6-7 in the main draws. Her best so far in 2023 was a run to the third round in Indian Wells. Teichmann ousted Ashlyn Krueger and Belinda Bencic in the first two rounds, to register her first consecutive wins of 2023. Her promising run however ended with a three-set defeat to Rebecca Peterson.
Teichmann then featured in Miami but was thrashed by Karolina MucHova in straight sets.

Fruhvirtova Looking to Impress
She is just 17 but has constantly been improving her game on the tour. Linda Fruhvirtova, who won the Chennai Open title last year, brings a 7-7 record to Charleston.
The Czech player was extremely impressive on her Australian Open debut this year, reaching the fourth round in just her second Grand Slam tournament.
Since then she has not gone that deep in a tournament but has succeeded in winning most of her first round matches. Fruhvirtova defeated Bethanie Mattek in the first round in Hua Hin, Danielle Collins in Dubai and Mayar Sherif in Indian Wells. She went down in the second round in all three events and then suffered a tough three-set defeat to Katherine Sebov in the opening round in Miami.
Fruhvirtova is more comfortable on hard courts than on clay. She is making her second main draw appearance in Charleston. Last year, she won her opener but lost in the second round.
Teichmann v Fruhvirtova Prediction and Tip
Teichmann has been inconsistent recently, but she has far more experience than Fruhvirtova on the tour and on clay. Teichmann should bring all her experiernce in the first round match and advance in the tournament.
