This will be the first career meeting between World No. 152 Johnson and World No. 100 Bagnis.

Johnson Winless At Tour level

Steve Johnson is 3-8 for the season, picking a couple of wins at the Cleaveland Challenger at the start of February. His other win came in Delray where he won the first round in qualifying.

Johnson has only played the main draw of an ATP tournament once this year and lost routinely to Adrian Mannarino in Dallas.

At 33, and currently sitting outside the top 150, the former world No. 21 has been restricted in his travels. Johnson has played seven tournaments in 2023, all on North American soil.

He will get a chance to set the record straight in Houston as the clay swing begins in the first week of April. The Californian has received a wild card at the Houston Open where he is a two-time champion.

Bagnis Looking for Second Win

Facundo Bagnis hasn’t fared any better at Tour level. Last week, he won a main draw on the ATP Tour for the first time in 2023, beating Felipe Alves in three sets in the first round of the Miami Open, but bowed out straight after at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz.

Bagnis’ best result this year, unsurprisingly, came on the clay. He made the quarterfinal of the Santiago Challenger in March, beating a pair of opponents ranked outside the top 200, before losing to Thiago Seyboth Wild.

Bagnis, at 33, is very much a veteran, although he doesn’t have a distinguished career compared to Johnson on the ATP Tour, with the majority of his success coming at the Challenger level.

The Argentine lefty previously played in Houston, almost eight years ago, losing in the second round of qualifying. So he is set to make his main draw debut when he plays Johnson on Monday.

Johnson v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

Bagnis has played a lot on clay in the build-up to Houston, so he’ll likely take comfort from that. But Johnson is one the most decorated players in this event and will be buoyed to push him right to the wire.
