Pedro Martinez v Pavel Kotov Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came on the Challenger circuit in 2018 when Kotov won in straight sets. That match had also come on clay.

Martinez Hoping for a Better Second Showing on Clay

Since making it to the quarterfinal of the Pune Open earlier this season – which was also his first appearance at the highest level in 2023 – Martinez’s results have fallen off the cliff.

In fact in these three months since that quarterfinal appearance, Martinez has won a mere two matches at the highest level.

What makes things worse is despite playing in all four clay court competitions on the South American swing, Martinez managed to win just a match. That’s one win and four defeats in that series of clay court tournaments.

So much so that Martinez was forced to feature in the Girona Challenger on clay last week where he made the semifinal.

Can he now shrug off those poor results earlier and march on solidly in Marrakesh?

Kotov’s Top-Level Career is Yet to Take Off

Kotov has been known for his exploits on the Challenger circuit having won three titles on it over the 2021-22 period. At the highest level, however, Kotov is yet to get the same kind of consistency.

From the 12 matches he’s played at the top level, Kotov has won just three and only one of those wins has come on clay.

Just one of those three wins came this year for Kotov, a shock victory over Alexei Popyrin in the first round of the ATP Dubai.

Featuring in his first match on clay this year, Kotov was dumped out of the San Remo Challenger in the very first round last week, leaving him with a lot to ponder as he enters the rest of the clay court swing.

He could have things get very uncomfortable despite his opponent’s poor form.

Martinez v Kotov Prediction and Tip

Nothing to choose between the two according to the bookmakers but we will have to back Martinez’s experience at the highest level especially given Kotov hasn’t quite shown any form here.
