Karatsev Hoping to Turn Things Around

It’s been another forgettable year for Karatasev. One in which the former world number 14 has fallen to 107th on the ATP charts and won a mere three matches over the first three months.

In fact all three of those victories came at the Pune Open in the first week of the season. That has been followed by a win drought which has seen Karatsev lose at the Australian Open, Montpellier Open, Rotterdam Open and ATP Doha.

So much so he opted to turn his attention to clay a week before this competition and featured on the Challenger tour last week. Unfortunately for him, Karatsev’s time at the San Remo Challenger was ended by Kimmer Coppejans in the very first round.

The Russian will now hope he can turn things around in a tournament he has never played before. And against a player who has done reasonably well on clay in his short career so far.

Passaro Happier on Clay

Like Karatsev, Passaro hasn’t had too much going his way this year either. Unlike his opponent, however, he does like playing on clay and would welcome this clay court swing with open arms and a touch of relief.

Four of the five titles that Passaro has won in his career have come on clay and his overall record on red dirt at the lower levels is a whopping 97-58. On the other hand, he is 26-27 on the other surfaces put together.

Strangely Passaro has opted to not play on clay all of this season so far, having featured in qualifiers of the Manama Challenger last and featuring on the hardcourt Challenger circuit in February instead of the South American swing.

He has an opponent who he would think he has a good chance to get the better of in this opener and notch up just his third career win.

Karatsev v Passaro Prediction and Tip

Karatsev is a 10/13 favourite here but we will have to go with Passaro given his own preference for this surface. Might see a three-setter here.
