McNally on a Three-Match Losing Streak

As she turns her focus to clay, McNally will first look to get back into some kind of a winning rhythm after the kind of season she has had so far.

The American is on a three-match losing streak coming into this tournament, having lost in the second round of the Austin Open, crashed out of the first round at Indian Wells Open and then failing to qualify in Miami.

McNally’s only performance of note came at the Merida Open earlier this year where she made the semifinal. A shock first round win over Lin Zhu in that match has been her best showing of the season.

Can she now turn things around on clay, a surface which arguably isn’t McNally’s most favourite anyway.

Niemeier Relieved to Get to Clay

Niemeier, unlike her opponent here, has a good record on clay. Her only WTA title also came on the same surface, last year at Makarska, which is why she would enter this tournament in Charleston with relief written large on her face.

Why relief?

It’s to do with the horrible nature of her start to the season so far.

The German with a career-best ranking of 61st on the WTA circuit, has lost 10 matches this season to go with just two wins. Five of these defeats have come on the bounce just before this tournament and she hasn’t won a main draw match in nearly two months.

On clay, however, things could be different for Niemeier, especially against a player who herself isn’t the best on this surface.

McNally v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

Expecting the clay-court specialist Niemeier to come through here in three sets against the struggling McNally.
