Sloane Stephens v Louisa Chirico Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these players, both on the WTA circuit and both in hardcourt competitions. Stephens won them both.

Stephens on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Much like has been the case for Stephens in recent years, she has struggled to maintain any kind of consistency this year either.

The former winner of this tournament enters the Charleston Open on the back of a three-match losing streak. Overall this season, Stephens is 4-7 on win-loss stats.

And this is quite underwhelming going for a player who has won a Grand Slam title, been in the final of another and has touched a world ranking of number three at one point.

Over the last four or so years, however, Stephens has shown a steady descent. In fact as recently as in 2019 she was ranked third in the world before ending that season 25th. By 2021, Stephens had fallen to 73rd and while she has managed to find a way to get back into the top 50, her inconsistencies continue to haunt her.

Which is why it would be interesting to see how well she switches over to clay where Stephens has done well in the past including her quarterfinal appearance at Roland-Garros last season.

Chirico Kicks on from ITF Boca Raton

After a string of defeats in the first two months of the season, Chirico opted not to feature in the Indian Wells Open or Miami Open qualifiers. Instead she shifted her focus towards the upcoming clay court season and played in the Boca Raton ITF competition early in March.

There, she overcame three opponents to make it to the semifinal and took the first set off her opponent in that last four encounter before going down in three.

With some of her confidence restored, Chirico then participated in the qualifiers of this event. A mild favourite in both her qualifying rounds against Sophie Chang and Elvina Kalieva, Chirico banished them in straight sets to take up this place in the main draw.

Against a player who has maintained a good record on clay, Chirico might not have it easy now but she would know how Stephens’ game has had a tendency to capitulate at times. Can she take advantage of that?

Stephens v Chirico Prediction and Tip

Stephens is a heavy favourite here but we cannot discount Chirico’s chances given her opponent’s misfiring issues at times.
