Maria Carle v Carol Zhao Head to Head

World No. 173 Carol Zhao was originally slated to start in the qualifiers of the Copa Colsanitas 2023, but as fate would have it, she was moved to the main draw.
However, some may say that this has only delayed the inevitability of her losing in Bogota – considering her recent form. In recent weeks, the 27-year-old Canadian has lost in the opening qualifying matches in Austin and Miami, followed by a defeat to Raluca Serban in the San Luis Challenger.
Overall, Zhao is 4-8 in 2023, with her victories coming in the qualifying/opening matches.
Her record on clay does not inspire a lot of confidence either, as she has bagged just one ITF title on the surface – in Charleston last year. In WTA events, Carol has not fared as well as she would have liked to.

Carle Struggling with Form too
Marie Carle of Argentina, who is the current World No. 153, is 5-9 in 2023. Her last tournament was an ITF event in Anapoima, Colombia, where she was beaten by Lena Papadakis in the first round.
Before that, however, she did reach the semifinal in the clay event in ITF Boca Raton as the top seed. That momentum should give her some sort of edge in Bogota.
Of course, that is easier said than done, as consistency is the biggest thing that Maria has been battling this season. However, her clay record over the years has been superb, and perhaps, it is in the coming weeks that Carle will turn it all around.
Among her highlights are six ITF singles finals, 11 ITF doubles finals, and a Challenger doubles runner-up feat.

This may very well come down to how each player fares on clay courts, and by the looks of it, Carle has the advantage in this regard. She is the odds-on favourite for this match.
