Maria Coming off WTA 125 Quarterfinal

While Maria did have a moment of glory earlier this season when she lifted an ITF title in Pune, her performances on the WTA circuit have been a far cry from her showing at Wimbledon last year. She had made the semifinal there before going down to Ons Jabeur.

Which is why a shift to clay would be an interesting one given Maria’s solidity on such surfaces.

In fact she was the winner of this tournament last year, having reached the title-deciding round as a qualifier. And while she didn’t do much of note on clay for the rest of the season, Maria will take a lot of positives from that result.

More recently, Maria had participated in the WTA San Luis Potosi competition on red dirt, a WTA 125 tournament that she managed to make the quarterfinals at. A straight-set rout at the hands of Sara Errani ended her stay there but she would want to continue with such results during the clay court swing as she looks to improve on her world number 66 ranking.

Scott Wins Her First Match of 2023 Last Week

Scott tried her luck at four hardcourt competitions this season, featuring in the qualifiers of the Auckland Open, Australian Open, Monterrey Open and Miami Open. And she lost in the opening qualifying round every single time.

Which is why her first round win at the WTA San Luis Potosi last week would have provided her with some relief. Sure it came against Whitney Osuigwe, who was 1/1 going into the encounter but a 6-0, 6-3 drubbing could go a long way in restoring Scott’s confidence.

The 18-year-old fell in the very next round to Laura Pigossi despite starting out as a favourite though.

And that could be put down to how Scott is still learning the ropes on clay, having barely featured on this surface before this. Can she put up a fight against the experienced Maria?

Maria v Scott Prediction and Tip

While Maria is a lot more experienced and has done reasonably well on clay in the past, is she consistent enough to back her to win this easily? We don’t think so and that’s why odds of 2/7 for her win don’t do justice at all.
