Elise Mertens v Mirjam Bjorklund Head to Head

Once ranked 12th in the world, Mertens has fallen to 39th on the WTA charts and that has been down to her lack of consistency.
She has won 10 of the 18 main draw matches she played this season, another indicator of how Mertens has been there or thereabouts but not quite doing what she was famous for at one point in her career.
This was in period between January 2017 and April 2021 in which she reached the final of 10 WTA events. Mertens went on to win six of them too.
In the following two years, Mertens has made just one final. And while she won the title there, her lack of positive results in other tournaments has led to a sharp fall in her rankings.
Mertens now enters the clay court season knowing she has done well on this surface in the past. Of the 11 tournament finals, five were on clay and she has also won a couple of titles on it. The question is if she can shrug off her poor form and go deep into this.

Bjorklund Hoping to Make a Name
At 24, Bjorklund will know she is quickly approaching the peak of her career and she would like to do a lot better than a career-best ranking of 123rd on the WTA charts that she possesses.
Currently 149th in the world, Bjorklund will need to turn some of the results in her favour and quickly at that if she wishes to break into the top 100. The good news for her would be the opportunity to do that on clay, which is arguably her favourite surface.
Bjorklund has already won a WTA125 title here in July 2021 and even on the ITF circuit, the Swede has nine finals on clay under her belt. She has won six of those.
Coming into this one, Bjorklund would realise she has a challenging opener ahead of her against the top seed in the competition but at the same time she would also know it’s wins over opponents like Mertens which could help her take that step up.

Mertens, while not at her best in recent times, should be good enough to get past her Swedish opponent. Might see a third set though given Bjorklund’s display on clay.
