Isner On a Four-Match Losing Streak

Isner’s not one of the greatest players on clay but it’s fascinating to see his record at this clay court tournament in Houston is one of the best in the business.

He has won a title here back in 2013 and made it to the final two other times including as recently as in 2022 when he overcame Steve Johnson, Frances Tiafoe and Cristian Garin before losing to Reilly Opelka in the title-decider.

The American’s previous three appearances in this tournament also led to two quarterfinal and one semifinal entries.

This season, however, has been a strange one for Isner. He has already made a tournament final in Dallas but other than that has done nothing of note. And by that one means Isner has not even won a match.

He has suffered first round exits in five tournaments, including the Australian Open, Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters and to now turn things around on clay could turn out to be a fascinating fight.

Brouwer Eases Past Kovacevic

Known more for his hardcourt exploits at the Challenger level, Brouwer did not face any difficulties in winning his first round match against Aleksandar Kovacevic here.

A quarterfinalist at this tournament last season, Brouwer was himself on a three-match losing streak coming into this competition but clinched a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kovacevic.

Brouwer was on court for an hour and 17 minutes and held on to his serve every single time despite facing five break-points. He broke his opponent twice – in the seventh game of the opening set and fifth of the second – with his second serve win percentage of 63% helping him eke out the result.

This was Brouwer’s seventh career win on the tour to go with just four defeats. And given Isner’s recent struggles and overall record on clay, it could well be a good chance for the Dutchman to inch past the American.

Isner v Brouwer Prediction and Tip

Isner starts off a favourite here but we will have to give it to Brouwer to clinch a fighting contest.
