Jessica Pegula v Anna Blinkova Head to Head

Pegula and Blinkova have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Pegula Hoping to Better Previous Showings at Charleston

Pegula has been playing at the Charleston Open since 2011, having appeared in eight editions before this. Not once has she made it past the round of 16 and even that she entered just three times.

On four previous occasions, Pegula was sent packing from the qualifiers itself.

Which is why a first round bye here means a win in this match against a player who has never been ranked in the top 50 will help Pegula emulate her best-ever showing in this competition.

She also enters the Charleston Open on the back of a very solid season so far that has seen her win 19 of the 25 matches she has played. Pegula was a semifinalist in Miami as well last week having earlier reached the quarterfinal of the Australian Open and the final in Doha.

Can the American start things off with a strong performance on her least favourite surface?

Blinkova Goes Past Bondar

Blinkova needed to save a set-point in the opening set but came through in straight sets to overcome Anna Bondar in the first round of her Charleston Open campaign.

Featuring in this tournament for the first time in her career, Blinkova saved two early break-points and then two of her own in the eighth game but neither player managed to get the better of the other’s serve.

In the tie-breaker that followed, Blinkova had a set-point at 6-5 and was then down one of her own at 6-7. She saved that and won the next two points to clinch the set. Blinkova then quelled any chances of a comeback from Bondar as she broke her opponent twice in quick succession to wrap it up 7-6 (7), 6-2.

While Blinkova has never won a clay court competition at any level, she has a few solid showings on this surface in 2022 itself.

She was a finalist at the Saint-Malo Open on the WTA 125 circuit and had also finished a runner-up at the Le Havre ITF competition in 2022. Can she test Pegula here?

Pegula v Blinkova Prediction and Tip

Pegula is a heavy favourite to start off her campaign on clay but can she ease her way past her opponent by making a quick transition? Can expect some fight here.
