Local lad Elliot Benchetrit wasn’t expected to put up much of a showing but he did push Munar a little before the Spaniard came through in straight sets in their first round match here in Marrakesh.
Munar needed an hour and a half to carve out a 6-4, 6-4 win over his 445th-ranked opponent as he overcame a loss of serve once apiece in each of the two sets.
In the first, Munar was up a break in the very first game before losing his own in the very next game. He broke for the second time in the seventh game to gobble up the lead.
The second set saw Munar go two breaks up and while he failed to serve it out at 5-2, the Spaniard completed the straight-set win the next time he had a chance.
This made it 5-3 for Munar on clay this season which includes a semifinal appearance at the Santiago Open earlier in February. Another opponent ranked outside the top 200 awaits him in round two.

Qualifier Vavassori Shocks Jarry
Vavassori was 2/1 underdog coming into his opening round match against Nicolas Jarry but he overcame those and over two hours of contest to clinch his win.
Going up against a player ranked nearly 150 places ahead of him, Vavassori registered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory, the first main draw one of the season for the Italian player.
What was so good about Vavassori’s performance was the manner in which he held his cool under pressure. That helped him save eight of the nine break-points he faced in the match.
Add that to the fact that Jarry had a better first serve win percentage and they both won 56% of their second serve points, it boiled down to who played the big points better. And it turned out that it was Vavassori who did that.
The question now is if he can double down on this effort against a player who has looked slightly iffy with his form.
Munar v Vavassori Prediction and Tip
This is an interesting one. On paper it should be Munar who goes through but we think Vavassori could have a shot here. At 11/8 he definitely looks worth a shot.
