Paula Badosa v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

They first met in the qualifiers of the 2020 Auckland Open before facing off in 2022 in Indian Wells. Badosa won both times in straight sets.

Badosa Has No Trouble Against Sherif

Having struggled with fitness and form, Badosa’s slide in the rankings from a career-best of second in the world to 33rd at the moment has been bit of a stunner.

The Spaniard had won just two of her last six matches coming into the clay court swing but she has done well on this surface in the past and that would have been bit of a comforting factor.

A semifinalist here in 2021 and a quarterfinalist last season, Badosa was a heavy favourite to go past Mayar Sherif in her opener despite her recent results. And she did just that, winning 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 33 minutes.

Seeded 12th, Badosa did face 11 break-points in the match – of which seven came in the first – and was broken once apiece in both the sets but always found a way to get back.

The stakes would now be a tad higher as she takes on Fernandez but this win would have given her a lot of confidence.

Fernandez Blasts Past Rodina

It took all of 72 minutes for Fernandez to end Evgeniya Rodina’s stay in the tournament as she carved out a 6-3, 6-2 win over her Russian opponent.

Fernandez, who had made the quarterfinal of the French Open last season, raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set before dropping her serve in the seventh. That relief did not last too long for her 330th-ranked opponent who went 0-40 down in the very next game and lost serve again.

In the second set, Fernandez gave Rodina no such gifts as she broke her twice and saved the only break-point she faced to clinch the victory.

Since making it to the quarterfinal in Auckland in the first week of January this season, Fernandez hasn’t won successive matches in tournament main draws in 2023. And it won’t be getting any easier even now as she takes on Badosa in this match.

Badosa v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

While Badosa is a favourite, Fernandez does have a decent record on clay as was seen at the French Open last season. We could see a gritty battle that goes into the third set.
