Maria Has No Worries against Scott

Having won this title last year and coming into this tournament on the back of a quarterfinal showing on the clay courts of San Luis Potosi, Maria was an overwhelming favourite in her opener against Katrina Scott.

And that’s exactly how the match turned out as well.

Maria carved out a 6-1, 6-4 win over her American teenaged opponent with the match lasting an hour and 23 minutes.

An early break of serve in the first is all that Maria needed to romp past Scott and she added a second break for good measure to wrap it up quickly. The second set was a slightly more challenging one for the German who dropped her serve after going 3-0 up but from that point on it wasn’t too difficult.

Maria did face a break-point while serving for the match but saved it and moved on to round two.

Alves Stunner for Yastremska

Not only was Dayana Yastremska a 1/6 favourite coming into her first round match against Alves, she also looked to easing to a win when she gobbled up the first set rather easily.

In the second, Yastremska was a break up as well before running into serving issues that her opponent took full toll of to turn things around.

Alves would go on to break Yastremska four more times in the match after earning a whopping 15 break-points and carve out a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 win in two hours and 37 minutes.

This was Alves’ third successive win against an opponent who had gone into the encounter as a heavy favourite after having overcome Joanne Zuger and Irina Bara in the qualifiers. Can she now put up a solid showing against someone who starts off a 1/4 favourite here?

Maria v Alves Prediction and Tip

Maria will be wary of Alves’ giant-killing spree and that could give her opponent a good chance to take advantage of what could be a slow start. The big question is whether Alves will be able to sustain that and we think she looks good to win a set here.
