Thiem Wins Only His Second Match of the Season

A lot has been spoken about how Thiem’s game looks to have deteriorated to a level one would have never thought would be the case after he won his maiden Grand Slam title in 2020. These days, there’re celebrations if he wins a match let alone goes deep into tournaments or win titles.

And that is what happened when Thiem overcame fellow Austrian Sebastian Ofner in the first round in Estoril.

Even that wasn’t the most straightforward of victories though. Up against a player ranked 122nd in the world, Thiem needed two hours and six minutes and overcame the loss of the first set to set up a three-set victory.

He came through 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 after getting broken a whopping four times in the encounter and will now take on a player who had never won a match on clay before this.

Shelton Registers Maiden Win on Clay

Since reaching the quarterfinal at the Australian Open, Shelton’s form even on his favourite, hardcourt surfaces, had withered away. He had lost five of his previous six matches coming into this tournament and playing on clay for his first ever main draw match on it might not have been the easiest of tasks.

Which is why a straight-set win, albeit slightly stretched, might have been a relief for the world number 39.

Shelton, who was on court for an hour and 36 minutes against Constant Lestienne, carved out a 7-5, 7-5 victory to march into the second round. He faced a set-point in the 10th game of the first set, saved it before breaking his opponent and serving it out.

In the second, the pair traded breaks in the first four games but then crucially in the 11th game again, Shelton broke Lestienne and won it off the second match-point he got in the next game.

Interestingly, Shelton doesn’t start off a favourite in this and that could well be pressure off his shoulders coming up against a player who has barely won anything.

Thiem v Shelton Prediction and Tip

Thiem starts a favourite on account of the surface on offer but we think this could be a lot closer than that. Shelton might even nick this one.
