Benjamin Bonzi v Pavel Kotov Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players, all of which have come on the Challenger circuit. Both players have won two matches apiece.

On clay, it’s one win apiece.

Bonzi Eases Past Vatutin

Alexey Vatutin is ranked 295th in the world and was knocked out of the competition in the very first qualifier. And yet here he was playing in the first round match against Bonzi as one of the luckiest loser – rarely do players ousted in the first qualifier get to do that!

Anyway, Bonzi did not have a lot of trouble getting past Vatutin in the opener though, needing an hour and 23 minutes for his 6-3, 6-3 victory.

All it took was a break of serve in the sixth game for Bonzi to grab the opening set off what turned out to be his fifth set-point.

The second set also seemed to be going the same way when Bonzi raced away to a 4-1 lead with two breaks of serves. He was then involved in four successive serve breaks, and that was enough for him to cruise into the second round.

Having also reached the second round in Estoril last season in what was his only main draw win on clay for the year, he will now hope to double that count here.

Kotov Scrapes Past Martinez

In what turned out to be a topsy-turvy battle, Kotov and Pedro Martinez lived up to the bookmakers’ pre-match odds as neither player looked like like the ultimate favourite for any length of time in the encounter.

It was Kotov who eventually triumphed in two hours and 44 minutes, winning 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (5) to reach the second round of an ATP tournament for only the second time this season.

A rather lopsided first couple of sets meant the match went into a decider where things changed drastically. Kotov had the early break but he dropped his serve off the very next game, before both players saved a break-point apiece.

Kotov then missed a match-point on Martinez’s serve in the 10th game, and then dropped his own serve in the 11th. Martinez failed to serve it out as Kotov broke right back off the first break-point he got before winning successive points from 5-5 to win the encounter.

Can he do something similar against Bonzi?

Bonzi v Kotov Prediction and Tip

Kotov has a total of two clay court wins on tour in his career now – an indicator of his lack of experience at the highest level on this surface. That gives Bonzi the edge and he starts a favourite here.
