Dominic Thiem v Gilles Simon Head to Head

It’s an interesting head to head between these two players in that they have played each other 10 times and Thiem has a healthy 8-2 lead over Simon. Simon’s only two wins had come very early in their meet-ups, way back in 2014 when he won at Nice and Toronto Masters, but since then the Austrian has been on a roll.

The wins have come at different times and on different surfaces, including Rome, Metz, Rotterdam, Acapulco, Wimbledon, Lyon and Paris Masters. The one remaining victory for Thiem came in their very first meeting, way back in 2014 as well, and it was at this very tournament in Indian Wells.

Troubled Thiem Looks for Respite

Austrian Thiem had made it to the final of the 2018 French Open and his stocks looked like they were rising. He won two other titles last year and reached a career-high ranking of fourth on the ATP circuit.

However, it’s been a grossly below-average start for Thiem to the 2019 season. At the Mubadala competition, he lost all his three matches, fell in the round one at the Doha Open, and then suffered the ignominy of a second round exit at the Australian Open.

There were concerns around his fitness as well at that time but things looked like they had changed for the better when he won a couple of matches to make it to the semi-finals at the Buenos Aires Open. However, then, again he crashed to a round one loss at the hands of Djere Laslo in the first round at ATP Rio Open.

While Thiem did not have it very easy, it looks like he would have been relieved to have got through his first round here at Indian Wells, beating Jordan Thompson 6-4, 7-5. Question now is if he can maintain the vice-like hold he’s had over Simon or can the Frenchman come out fighting.

Signs of the Odd Spark from Gilles Simon

Simon has made it as far as the semi-finals of two ATP 250 tournaments this season and both times he had a first round bye. First, at the Pune Open he overcame Benoit Paire but failed at the last four hurdle to Kevin Anderson. This was followed by the Sydney International semi-final but since then he has had three below-par campaigns.

At the Australian Open, Simon won his opener but went down to Alex Bolt in the second, then lost to Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga in the second round at Montpellier before another second round ouster at the Rotterdam Open.

The odd spark, as mentioned above, came in the Marseille Open where he made the quarter-final and comes into the this match on the back of a very difficult, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 win over Malek Jaziri in the second round here. Much like Thiem, he had a first round bye.

Dominic Thiem v Gilles Simon Predictions & Tips

Thiem’s 4/9 to win this while Simon enters at 2/1 (betway) but one senses the Frenchman has a good chance to steal a set off the Austrian.

Tip: Simon to win a set: 8/11 (William Hill)
