Tallon Griekspoor v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head

While they have never faced off at the highest level, there have been two matches on the Challenger circuit between these two players. Both came in the finals of events and on clay, and both were won by Griekspoor.

Griekspoor Opens Clay Court Swing with Difficult Win

It wasn’t the easiest of starts to the clay court swing for Griekspoor who needed to overcome a very slow beginning before scraping past Elias Ymer.

The Dutchman was on court for nearly two hours as he carved out a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Ymer to seal his quarterfinal berth. He had earlier received a first round bye.

It would have felt like a whirlwind of a first set to Griekspoor who was broken two times in the very first two service games. The second went the other way with Griekspoor taking a 4-0 lead before losing his on a couple of occasions and then breaking Ymer for the third time to clinch the equaliser.

In the decider, both players lost their serves in the first two games but Griekspoor then raced away to a 4-1 lead with two more breaks. He did lose his serve once after that but that did not stop him from registering his first win on clay for the season.

Carballes Baena Benefits from Kuzmanov Retirement

Just seven minutes into their second round match, Dimitar Kuzmanov retired from the encounter to give Carballes Baena a place in the last eight for the second season in a row.

Carballes Baena had earlier gotten past Maxime Cressy in a gruelling first round encounter that had lasted three sets and two hours and 19 minutes.

While the second win did come in fortunate circumstances for Carballes Baena, it was also the first time this season that the Spaniard won successive matches in a tournament. Known for his performances on clay, Carballes Baena had won his openers at the Buenos Aires Open and Santiago Open but hadn’t gone beyond.

Now he has a chance to make it to the semifinal of an ATP event for the first time since July 2021 but has an opponent who is ranked nearly 50 places ahead of him. Can he cause an upset here?

Griekspoor v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip

Griekspoor starts off a favourite here and while he has done well in hardcourt competitions it must be quickly pointed out he had won six Challenger titles on clay in 2021. Backing him to win this and in two sets.
