Jessica Pegula v Paula Badosa Head to Head

Pegula won their only meeting in Miami last year, but that match ended just after five games as Badosa retired with the score at 4-1.

After falling the round of 16 for three times in the past, Jessica Pegula has finally made it to the last eight in Charleston.

The world no. 3 edged out 15th seed Irina-Camelia Begu in a two hour and 32 minute contest on Thursday. In a match full of twists and turns, Pegula took the first set 7-5 and then she was cruising to victory at 4-0, but a determined Begu fought back to win six games in a row to stay alive in the contest.

The Romanian carried the momentum into the third set, racing to a 4-0 lead, but just when it seemed the momentum had shifted towards the world no. 37, Pegula bounced back. She won six consecutive games to wrap up the the match 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

Pegula had begun her campaign with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Anna Blinkova in the second round on Wednesday.

With the win Pegula is now 21-6 in 2023. She will be featuring in a fifth quarterfinal of the season with an aim to reach her fourth semifinal of the year. She was a finalist in Doha and a semifinalist in Dubai and Miami.

Badosa Ends Shnaider’s Promising Run

Paula Badosa is into the third quarterfinal in Charleston in as many appearances after she defeated Diana Shnaider in straight sets on Thursday.

The Spaniard, who was a semifinalist in 2021 and a quarterfinalist in 2022, needed just an hour and 11 minutes to beat the Russian 6-1, 6-3. Badosa was not broken by the world no. 95 as she saved all four of the break points that she faced in the match. In contrast, the Spaniard held 10 break points in the match and she converted four of them.

This was Badosa’s third straight sets win in the tournament. She began the campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Mayar Sherif and then battled past Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in the second round.

Badosa is 9-4 in 2023 following the three wins in Charleston. Can she reach the semifinals for the second time in the tournament?

Pegula v Badosa Prediction and Tip

The top seed will be bracing for another close contest. Badosa does will in Charleston and has a better record than Pegula in the tournament, but the American has displayed excellent form so far this season and will be high on confidence after reaching her maiden quarterfinal in Charleston. Expect Badosa to give a tough fight, but Pegula is expected to edge past the Spaniard.
