Bencic Bounces Back to Beat Rogers

Belinda Bencic stayed on course to defend her title in Charleston as she bounced back from a set down to beat Shelby Rogers in the third round on Thursday.

The world no. 11 had built a 0-3 lead in the first set, but Rogers came back to win the last five games in a row and take a 1-0 lead.

They both traded a break early in the second set before Bencic got a second break in the final game to force the decider. Bencic then took charge of the match in the final set, breaking the world no. 44 twice and taking the contest 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

It was a far tougher match for the Swiss than her second round contest against Katherine Sebov. Bencic did not face a single break point in that match and converted 5 of 9 to win 6-0, 6-3.

Bencic broke Rogers five times as well, but got broken three times in the match.

Bencic has been in fine form this season, having already won two WTA 500 titles in Adelaide-2 and Abu Dhabi. She had also made it to the last eight in Doha.

Last year, the Swiss had won the Charleston Open title by beating Ons Jabeur in the final. She was also a semifinalist in 2014 and a quarterfinalist in 2019. Can she keep the momentum going in the quarterfinal?

Alexandrova Overcomes Grabher

World no. 17 Ekaterina Alexandrova overcame a slow start to beat Austria’s Julia Grabher in straight sets on Thursday and reach the quarterfinals for the second straight year.

The seventh seed Russian needed an hour and 24 minutes to win the third round match 6-4, 6-2. Both players saved two break points each in their first service games of the match, but it was Grabher, who got the first break of the match in the fourth game and built a 1-4 lead.

However, Alexandrova bounced back to win five consecutive games that handed her the first set. She made good start in the second set as well, breaking her opponent twice and building a 4-1 lead. Grabher pulled a break back but the Russian broke once again before completing a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Alexandrova had also won the second round match in straight sets, defeating Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 6-3.

Alexandrova, who had made it to the semifinals last year, improved her season record to 9-6. She will be playing in her second quarterfinal of the year on Friday. She had also made it to the last eight in the previous tournament in Miami. Can she reach the semifinals in Charleston?

Bencic v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip

There is little to choose between the two. Both have won thrice each against each other and they both are comfortable playing on clay. So expect a close contest. The defending champion will be a slight favourite as she has displayed much better form this year and also won the semifinal against Alexandrova in the same tournament last year.
