Dan Evans v Andrea Vavassori Head to Head

Evans and Vavassori have never faced off before in a competitive match.

Evans Surprises Popyrin

Evans was on a six-match losing streak entering this tournament on clay which isn’t quite his favourite surface.

In fact last season, the Brit had won just four matches spread across seven clay court competitions and combine the aforementioned two factors, it was no surprise he was a 6/5 underdog going into his second round match against Alexei Popyrin.

And following the first round bye, he shattered those odds – and his opponent’s game – by winning 6-1, 6-3 in a match that lasted an hour and 16 minutes.

Faced with two break-points in the match, Evans saved them both while getting past his opponent’s serve on four occasions from the seven opportunities he got. He raced away to a 2-0 lead in the first before breaking his opponent two more times – in the fifth and seventh game.

The second set was slightly tougher but Evans put up a solid front and found his first win since the Australian Open.

Vavassori Makes Stunning Recovery against Munar

Vavassori was down a set and then again a break in the second in his second round match against Jaume Munar. Munar then served for the match at 5-4, and while he was broken, he went on to take a 6-4 lead in the tie-breaker.

The world number 201 saved both match-points and then won another two points in a row to claim the second set.

And with Munar still shocked how he had let go of such a golden opportunity, Vavassori attacked his serves rather aggressively. Vavassori missed three break-points in the first game of the decider, another one in the third but finally broke off the second chance he had in the fifth.

That was enough for Vavassori to go on to win in three, grabbing a shock quarterfinal spot with a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-4 win over Munar.

Having also shocked Nicolas Jarry in the first round despite starting out a 2/1 underdog, it would be interesting to see how Vavassori goes against a player whose clay court record isn’t the best.

Evans v Vavassori Prediction and Tip

While Vavassori is 11/10 to win this, we think he has a fair chance to get past Evans here. Expecting Vavassori to triumph in three.
