Evans Overcomes Second Set Stutter to Beat Vavassori

Britain’s Evans was on a six-match losing streak coming into this tournament. A win over Alexei Popyrin ended that and he then made it two wins in a row by defeating Andrea Vavassori of Italy.

He did not have a lot difficulties in the first set but fell 5-3 in the second before clinching a 6-3, 7-5 victory in a match that lasted an hour and 49 minutes.

A couple of breaks of serves in the opening set seemed to point towards a comfortable Evans cruise but when he lost his serve in the fifth game, the match was back in balance. Evans did find a way out of it as Vavassori failed to serve it out in the 10th game and then dropped his serve in the 12th.

Evans will now hope to subdue a player who was 4-9 on win-loss coming into this one.

Carballes Baena Stuns Griekspoor

Clay is Carballes Baena’s favourite surface by some distance but not too many expected him to put up any sort of a fight against Tallon Griekspoor who was 3/5 going into their quarterfinal encounter.

Carballes Baena, however, came back from a woeful second set showing to clinch a place in the semifinal of a tournament for the first time this season. The Spaniard won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in two hours and eight minutes to end Griekspoor’s run in the competition.

It was a match littered with breaks of serves with both players getting broken 11 times in total. Three of them came in the first three games of the deciding set as Carballes Baena took control by breaking his opponent again in the seventh game of the third.

This follows an opening round win over Maxime Cressy and a retirement from Dimitar Kuzmanov in the second round that had allowed Carballes Baena to move forward.

Evans v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip

Evans will hold some advantage just on the account of the difference in the rankings, he is 30th to his opponent’s 82nd. That said, bookmakers have Carballes Baena starting out a favourite, making this a very interesting one. Backing Evans here.
