Diego Schwartzman v David Goffin Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two and Goffin leads a whopping 5-1. Only one of these six matches, however, have come in the last five years and none of the matches were played on clay.

Schwartzman Struggles Seeing No End

As recently as July last year, Schwartzman was ranked 14th in the world, just one spot lower than his season-best of 13th. Poor performances in the rest of the season didn’t help though and he fell to 25th by the time the year had ended.

Unfortunately for Schwartzman things have gone further down south for him in 2023.

Known for his clay-court mastery, Schwartzman has featured in five such tournaments this year and rather shockingly, has conjured up a 0-5 win-loss record in them. This is rather unprecedented for a man who was a quarterfinalist at this competition in 2022.

All three of Schwartzman’s wins this season have come in hardcourt competitions and to go with that, he has notched up 10 defeats as well.

Can the Argentine get back to his solidity on clay?

Goffin’s Clay Record Quite Good

While four of Goffin’s six career titles at the highest level have come in hardcourt competitions, his record isn’t one to be trifled with.

In fact, in terms of win percentage, his 88 wins to 56 defeats in clay court tournaments is the best he has among all surfaces. That counts to a whopping 61.1% as compared to 58% on hardcourt and 56% of grass.

Last year, Goffin had won a clay-court competition at Marrakesh and would later go on to make the third round in Madrid and the French Open respectively.

For a change, this season Goffin hasn’t played any clay court competitions entering into the first of three Masters 1000 tournaments on dirt. That could be one of the factors that goes against him even as his opponent struggles to notch up wins this season.

Schwartzman v Goffin Prediction and Tip

While Schwartzman starts a favourite, the situation is so grave for him this year that we don’t mind taking a punt on Goffin, who at 1/1 looks to be a tempting option.
