Brandon Nakashima v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players at the highest level and Mackenzie has won every single time including twice this very year. All three of those wins came in hardcourt competitions.

Nakashima had won one match earlier on the Challenger circuit in 2020.

Nakashima Kick-Starts Clay Swing

Nakashima has won an ATP tournament, was the winner of the Next Gen Finals last season and has 49-34 win-loss record in hardcourt competitions. On clay, however, he is yet to find his footing.

The American has featured in only seven matches in his clay career and won three of them. All three came last year when he reached the second round in Barcelona and was then a third round entrant at the French Open before he went down to Alexander Zverev.

What’s interesting to see is Nakashima hasn’t won a singles ATP 1000 Masters match on clay in his career so far – another indicator of his surface preference.

He will be up against another player whose record on clay isn’t the brightest, giving him a decent chance of adding to his win count on this surface. What might go against Nakashima is the manner in which he’s started off the season, having lost five of the nine matches he’s played so far in 2023.

McDonald 14-8 for the Season

Like Nakashima, McDonald’s record on clay isn’t the best but this has been a very solid season for the American.

He has already beaten Rafael Nadal, albeit when he was injured, and overcome Nakashima and Matteo Berrettini as well at different times in 2023. Overall, he has won 14 of the 22 matches he’s featured in including one at the Davis Cup level.

What needs to be seen is if McDonald can overturn his poor record on clay, especially on the Masters 1000 circuit. Like Nakashima he is yet to win a match in Monte-Carlo, Rome or Madrid, having gotten bundled out in the qualifiers on all three previous occasions.

That being said, McDonald did make it to the third round of the French Open last season, which might boost his confidence a tad.

Nakashima v McDonald Prediction and Tip

On paper, Nakashima is a favourite here but it could be a case of 12 of one, a dozen of the other. This could go into the third set as a result.
