Roberto Carballes Baena v Alexandre Muller Head to Head

This will be their second meeting having first met at the 2019 French Open. Carballes Baena had won that match in straight sets.

Carballes Baena Makes Second ATP Final

Carballes Baena has never been ranked in the top 70 of the world rankings before this and has just one ATP title to his name. That had come in 2018 in Quito but since then he has never even made it to the final of any top events.

He had shown the odd spark this season, reaching the second round of four of the tournaments he had started in but never beyond.

Which is why wins over Maxime Cressy, Dimitar Kuzmanov (albeit through retirement) and Tallon Griekspoor were quite surprising, taking Carballes Baena into the semifinal.

And in the semifinal, Carballes Baena was up against the world number 30, Dan Evans, who despite the disparity in the rankings was bit of an underdog. Evans did grab the first set but the Spaniard managed to hold on to his serve till the very end of the second set before breaking his opponent and levelling things out.

In the decider, a resurgent Carballes Baena broke Evans twice to clinch the match in two hours and 37 minutes.

Can he now overcome Muller here to win his second title?

Muller Hoping to Break into the Top 100

Muller’s career-best ranking, which is also his current ranking is 126th in the world. Even if he loses this final he will be close to breaking into the top 100 but if he can get the better of Carballes Baena, the Frenchman will definitely make it past that landmark.

And the milestone will be richly deserved with Muller having gotten past Richard Gasquet, Francesco Passaro, Lorenzo Musetti and now Pavel Kotov to make the final. He defeated Kotov 7-6 (3), 7-5 in a semifinal lasting slightly over two hours.

The first set went to serve till the eighth game before the two traded breaks in the next two games. The tie-breaker that followed turned out to be a straightforward one for Muller though.

In the second, Kotov went 2-0 up, lost his serve in the fourth game but then broke back to take a 5-3 lead. Serving for set soon after, he was broken to 15 and then again for the second time to end Kotov’s stay in the tournament.

Does Muller have the game to test the experience of Carballes Baena?
