Holger Rune v Dominic Thiem Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between Rune and Thiem.

While Rune is fond of hardcourt tennis, his record on clay isn’t the worst in the business. And vastly improved following the kind of season he had in 2022.
Rune has a winning percentage of 65.7% in hardcourt competitions but had just two wins from five clay-court competitions last season. The turnaround came at the Munich Open where he went on to defeat Alexander Zverev on his way to winning his maiden ATP title.
A semifinal at the Lyon Open followed soon after but he would be specially chuffed with his showing at the French Open where he reached the quarterfinal. Wins over Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas would have made it extra special.
Which is why when he returns to clay this season, following a brilliant end to the previous year on other surfaces too, all eyes will be on Rune. Can he make it to the third round here, having never done that in Monte-Carlo before this?

Thiem Blasts Gasquet Away
Having reached the quarterfinal in Estoril, Thiem had form on his side after having suffered multiple reverses throughout the rest of the season.
He had overcome Sebastian Ofner and Ben Shelton in that tournament before going down to Quentin Halys easily.
Which is why despite starting out a favourite against Richard Gasquet, there were a few question-marks still being raised about the possibility of that result. As it turned out, Thiem did not waste a lot of time overcoming Gasquet in their opener, winning 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and a half.
Thiem did well on his serve, winning 87% of his first services and facing no break-points. He could have done better with the 10 break-points that he earned, winning just three of them, but that proved to be enough for the Austrian.
Can he now score a win over a top-10 player for the first time since 2020?
Rune v Thiem Prediction and Tip
It gives a big indication how difficult things have been for Thiem given he hasn’t won a match against a top-10 player since 2020. That being said, it’s a tad surprising he is a 12/5 underdog in this one. We think it could get slightly closer than that.
