Hubert Hurkacz v Jack Draper Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2022 Antwerp Open where Hurkacz had needed three sets to get past Draper.

Hurkacz in a Struggling Win

It was never expected to be an easy beginning for Hurkacz but not too many would have thought it would go that far.

In fact, it could well turn out to be one of the longest matches of the tournament and we are still in the first round of the tournament. And that actually could well be a result of Hurkacz’s poor form more recently.

Having come into the match on the back of four defeats from the previous six matches, Hurkacz was on court for three hours and 21 minutes to carve out a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) victory over his Serbian opponent.

Both players lost their serve four times, including twice in the second set with Djere having a chance to serve out the match at 5-4 too. He lost his serve and then the ensuing tie-breaker.

In the decider, Djere was 2-0 up again but Hurkacz broke in the very next game and again to get his opportunity to serve for a place in the second round. This time around Hurkacz frittered away four match-points, saved one of his own before winning the highly topsy-turvy encounter in the tie-breaker.

Draper Tames Baez in Shock Result

Sebastian Baez is a clay-court specialist who has already won a title on this surface this year. Which is why it wasn’t too much of a surprise that he started out a 1/2 favourite in this opening round match against Draper.

Draper is more known for his performances on the quicker hardcourt surfaces, having won and lost one match before this on clay.

That he would come through the manner he did, winning 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 52 minutes, was one of the shocks of the first round not considering seeded players. Draper did face 12 break-points in the encounter but his cool temperament allowed him to save 11 of them.

In turn he broke his opponent three times from the four chances he got to carve out a place in the second round on his Monte-Carlo debut.

Can he put up a fight against the world number 13?

Hurkacz v Draper Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz is a favourite here but we think Draper could exploit his opponent’s weaknesses in this one and might even carve out an upset. Backing a Draper victory.
