Alex de Minaur v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two and de Minaur leads 2-1. All three matches came in hardcourt tournaments with their last match-up having come in 2020.

de Minaur Blows Murray Out

In a match where de Minaur was in control of his game throughout the encounter, he disposed off Andy Murray in an hour and 28 minutes to seal his second round berth. This is the second successive year in which the Aussie has made the second round at this tournament.

De Minaur was off to a rip-roaring start as he broke Murray to 30 in each of his first two service games to go 4-0 up, and soon after that he went past his opponent’s serve a third time to clinch the first set 6-1.

Murray offered a bit more resistance in the second set, and while he also got to 30 on his opponent’s serve on three occasions in it, de Minaur did not allow him a single break-point.

And in the fourth game, he broke Murray for the fourth time in the match before serving it out easily and closing out his first clay win of the season.

Having won the Acapulco Open earlier this year, de Minaur had then stumbled in his openers at both, the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters. This win will come as a huge relief for the Aussie.

Struff Eases Past Ramos-Vinolas

It took Struff a similar amount of time as de Minaur to go past his first round opponent and seal his spot in the round two for the first time here since 2019.

Struff won 6-4, 6-3 against clay-court specialist Albert Ramos-Vinolas, a player who has been struggling with his form in recent times. And Struff looked to have taken full toll of that.

Having suffered an early break of serve in the match, Struff came back to level things out at 3-3 before breaking his opponent while he served to stay in the set.

The German then went 2-0 ahead with a second successive break, warded off three break-points across two service games and soon served it out in the ninth game. While he frittered away two match-points and had to endure a break-point, Struff came through on his third match-point.

Can he now take down de Minaur who doesn’t have the best clay-court record in his career?

de Minaur v Struff Prediction and Tip

While de Minaur is a favourite here, these players’ respective record on clay levels things out a tad. Might even see Struff coming up with an upset win.
