Cerundolo Stuns Norrie in Opener

Not only is Cameron Norrie ranked 13th in the world – which is 20 ahead of Cerundolo – he has also had a solid season of clay court tennis so far with a title win and a final appearance on this surface so far.

Cerundolo, as a result, was a 7/5 underdog going into his opener against Norrie but the manner in which the match panned out it didn’t seem like Norrie was the favourite.

In an encounter lasting a mere 72 minutes, Cerundolo had demolished Norrie 6-3, 6-4 to advance to round two.

This was after Cerundolo had entered the Monte-Carlo Masters for the first time with a 11-9 win-loss record under his belt. Can he now overcome Berrettini and double his career win-count in Masters 1000 clay court competitions?

Berrettini Eases Past Cressy

After having made a solid start to the season when he won three successive matches at the United Cup earlier this year, Berrettini has struggled to get going again. Which is why a straightforward opening round win here against Maxime Cressy was much needed to assuage any nerves he might have been facing.

Berrettini did just that, winning his opener 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 26 minutes to set up his meeting with Cerundolo.

He faced two break-points in the match, both of which came in the first set and saved them easily. In turn, he went 4-3 ahead with a break of serve in the first set, missed out on two set-points at 5-3 before finishing it off on his serve in the next game.

And driving home the advantage, Berrettini then broke his opponent twice in the first three games to storm to a 4-0 lead in the second set. From that point onward, there was no looking back with the Italian losing a mere seven points on serve in the second set.

He will have a far tougher second round opponent though.

Cerundolo v Berrettini Prediction and Tip

Berrettini is a slightly better player on clay considering his 45-20 win-loss record on it but the current form does point to Cerundolo having covered that gap up. In a match of equals, we would like to take a chance on Cerundolo here.
