Andrey Rublev v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

This is a rivalry that dates back to 2016 when they had met in the qualifiers of the French Open. Since then they have faced off once on the Challenger circuit, once in an exhibition tournament and four other times at the highest level and Rublev is 4-3 ahead.

At the highest level, it’s 1-1 on clay with Struff having beaten Rublev the last time they had faced off in the first round of the 2021 French Open.

Rublev Dumps out Khachanov

Karen Khachanov might have come into his third round match against Rublev with a bit of form under his belt but he did not last too long against his opponent’s pedigree.

Rublev needed an hour and a half and some stodgy defense in the first set to overcome Khachanov in two. He won 7-6 (4), 6-2 to enter the quarterfinals here for the second time in his career. He was a runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2021.

Interestingly, the first set was fought tooth and nail with neither player giving an inch. There was no break-point on offer in it and it was only when Rublev raced off to a 4-0 lead in the tie-breaker that it looked like somebody finally had some advantage.

In a sharp contrast, Rublev dropped his serve in the very first game of the second set but from that point on broken his opponent three times to carve out an easy victory in the end. And now with the world number four cleared out of his path, Rublev will think he has a good chance of making the last four.

Struff Knocks Ruud Out

Casper Ruud might not have been in the best of form all year but that was on hardcourt surfaces. On clay, in the very first tournament he featured in last week in Estoril, Ruud had shown what he is capable of with a title win.

Here he had started off with a straight-set win over Botic van de Zandschulp but coming up against Struff, he looked to have come a cropper.

And while Struff seemed to have handed the initiative back to Ruud in the second set, he managed to find his bearings just at the right time to clinch a straight-set win.

Struff led Ruud 6-1, 5-2 in their third round match when the Norwegian number one fought back to restore some parity. He broke Struff back twice to level things out at 5-5 and then saved a couple of break-points to push the set into a tie-breaker.

And while they went throughout the set neck in neck, Struff managed to find a way to knock the world number four out, 6-1, 7-6 (6) in an hour and 45 minutes to reach the quarterfinal stage.

Can the German qualifier continue his fairy-tale journey?

Rublev v Struff Prediction and Tip

It might be a bit of a tussle but we expect Rublev to come through in straight sets here.
