Medvedev in a Three-Hour Tussle with Zverev

Alexander Zverev was one of those who had said before the tournament began that Medvedev can keep hating clay but at the same he’s improving with every match he’s playing. So much so that the German said Medvedev could well win his first tournament on dirt this season.

He definitely took a step closer to the doing that in this tournament by defeating Zverev himself, but not before the world number 16 had all but snatched the result from his opponent.

In the end, Medvedev took more than three hours and saved two match-points before carving out a comeback-from-behind win. He won 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7) in a hard-fought encounter that saw both players drop serve six times in the match.

Zverev even had a chance to serve it out for the match in the second set at 5-4 and then again in the third set at the same scoreline. But Medvedev just didn’t give up, and then shrugged off the two match-points in the final set tie-breaker before winning it off his first.

Medvedev will now hope he can quickly recover from this gruelling match-up to be ready in time for his last eight meeting with a player who did not even take to court.

Rune Benefits from Berrettini Withdrawal

Matteo Berrettini looked to be getting back near his best level in the lead-up to his third round match against Rune but was forced to withdraw from their match because of a grade 2 tear in his international oblique muscle.

With that, Rune has now reached the quarterfinal of this tournament for the first time, having gotten eliminated in the second round last season. He was also dumped out in the opener the first time he had played here in 2021.

Rune had earlier gotten past Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-4 in what was a fine performance from the Danish number one having outplayed a player who had looked good for a change.

Having won the Munich Open title last season, Rune had also reached the quarterfinal of the French Open in what has been his best showing in a Grand Slam. Can he now up the ante in what could become a keen battle?

Medvedev v Rune Prediction and Tip

The bigger question for Medvedev now is whether he will be able to get fit in time for this one having featured in such a contest against Zverev. We think it might not be a problem to begin with but as the match wears on, it could become more and more difficult for Medvedev. So if he wins, he wins it in two.
