Tallon Griekspoor v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

This will be their second meeting. In the first, Griekspoor won in three sets at the Melbourne Summer Set last season.

Griekspoor Surprised at Marrakesh & Monte-Carlo

While there’s not a lot of difference in the win percentage on clay as compared to hardcourt surfaces for Griekspoor, it must be quickly added he hasn’t played a lot of his top-level tennis on dirt.

The Dutchman, who started off this season with a title win in Pune, has failed to replicate the same form elsewhere but even more importantly has struggled to make it count on clay either.

Starting out his clay court campaign at the Marrakesh Open with an opening round bye, Griekspoor defeated Elias Ymer in the second round. Since then, however, he has suffered two reverses at the hands of players who have gone into matches as marginal second-favourites.

Roberto Carballes Baena was 27/20 coming up against Griekspoor in Marrakesh but still managed a three-set win before Stan Wawrinka (1/1 to win) came back from a set down to edge out his Dutch opponent.

Can Griekspoor turn things around against a player who is coming off successive second round appearances on clay.

Popyrin with a Shock Win in Monte-Carlo

Like Griekspoor, Popyrin hasn’t shown a great inclination towards clay but his performances at the Monte-Carlo Masters will gladden his heart.

The Aussie, who had earlier made the second round at the Marrakesh Open, overcame a couple of qualifying round opponents to make it to the main draw in Monte-Carlo.

And this was followed by a shock, straight-set win over Dusan Lajovic who was 2/5 going into their opening round encounter. That Popyrin lost in the second would have been a bit of a dampener but one needs to consider that he fought hard and took Nicolas Jarry to three sets in that match.

Now he comes up against a player whose form has looked a tad shaky on clay and despite starting out a second favourite, Popyrin will think he has a chance here.

Griekspoor v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

It’s quite tempting to go with Popyrin for a win here with bookmakers offering 6/4 for that here. Could see the match get into a third set too.
