Lorenzo Sonego v Quentin Halys Head to Head

Sonego and Halys will be facing off for the first time.

Sonego Starts Clay Swing with Early Monte-Carlo Defeat

Known for his performances on clay, Sonego started off reasonably well at the Monte-Carlo Masters last week when he overcame Ugo Humbert, albeit in a fighting three-setter.

In the second round, however, Sonego was sent packing from the tournament by Daniil Medvedev, who before that had had his struggles in clay court competitions. He lost 6-3, 6-2 in that match.

Sonego had ended the previous season’s clay-court swing with four successive defeats following a third round appearance at the French Open. Aslan Karatsev, Juan Pablo Varillas and Pablo Andujar had all gotten the better of him last season.

He now starts off at this tournament where he had last played in 2019 and lost in the first round following his entry through the qualifiers. Can he make it past that this time around?

Halys Returns from Estoril Semis

It’s been quite a season for Halys who was ranked 153rd in the world last year but has risen to 66th at the moment. Earlier in the year he had also touched a career-best of 61st on the ATP charts.

And that has been down to his more recent performances at Miami and Estoril where he won three successive matches apiece.

On the hardcourts of Miami, Halys reached the fourth round before Daniil Medvedev got the better of him. This was followed by wins over Nuno Borges, Roberto Bautista Agut and Dominic Thiem on his way to the semifinal at the Estoril Open.

It took Casper Ruud to take him down.

With that kind of form, he will start confidently against a player who has had a few struggles in recent times, giving Halys a chance despite starting out a second favourite in this one.

Sonego v Halys Prediction and Tip

While Sonego is a favourite, we will go with Halys to win this given the tempting odds on offer for his victory.
