Roberto Carballes Baena v Marcos Giron Head to Head

Their only previous main draw match at the highest level came at the 2019 Winston-Salem Open where Carballes Baena had won in three. Overall, Giron leads 2-1 but they have never faced off on clay before.

Carballes Baena Doubled Title Tally Count Last Week

In what was a very strange tournament, Carballes Baena would have been surprised to find himself at the receiving end of four three-setters at the Marrakesh Open.

What was doubly surprising, especially for those watching, is the manner in which he won all four of those matches to clinch the title at Marrakesh. It was his second ATP tournament win having earlier lifted his maiden title in 2018.

Rather interestingly, the only match that did not go into the third set for Carballes Baena was one against Dimitar Kuzmanov in which his opponent retired after just two games.

The Spaniard did not feature in the Monte-Carlo Masters qualifiers last week because he was busy playing in Marrakesh but will now hope to feature in all the remaining top clay court competitions this season after having hit his career-best ranking of 49th again.

Giron’s Barely Played on Clay

In his career spanning nearly nine years, Giron has won just seven matches on clay in main draws of ATP events. That should given enough of an indication around his performances on this surface, which is clearly not his go-to.

What Giron would derive comfort from is his first round win at the Houston Open where he routed Emilio Gomez for the loss of a mere two games. He followed it up with a straight-set loss to Tomas Machac.

Coming up against a player in the kind of form that Carballes Baena is in would be a task though with Giron having otherwise also had a modest year. His 9-9 win-loss record involves three first round defeats including ones at the Australian Open and Miami Masters.

His best hope would be for some major complacency from Carballes Baena but it’s probably expecting too much.
