Venus Williams v Christina McHale Head to Head
Interestingly, these two Americans have never faced off before this despite been on the circuit for years now.
Already Caused an Upset, Venus
Having made it as far as the semi-finals last season, Venus Williams was one of the dangerous floaters in the draw and she proved her mettle by defeating the Australian Open runner-up and in-form Petra Kvitova in the previous match. After dropping the first set, Venus came through with flying colours, winning in three and setting up this clash with the 140th-ranked McHale.
Venus Williams is in just her third tournament for the season. She was a quarter-finalist at the Auckland Open in the lead-up to the first major in Melbourne and then made it as far as the third round at the Australian Open. There she went down to Simona Halep.
And since then, much like her sister, Serena, Venus hasn’t played anything coming into Indian Wells Open. However, if one thought that age and rustiness might combine to get past the American, she has already beaten Andrea Petkovic and Kvitova and looks good for a lot more.

McHale’s Coming off Her Worst Season
Since turning pro in 2007, McHale has had just two seasons with a negative win-loss record – 2013 and last year in 2018. And the last season turned out to be so woeful that for every win she notched up almost two defeats and fell outside the top 150 in the WTA rankings.
As a result of that, McHale has had to go through the qualifying rounds of many events, but at the same time she has managed to make it to the third round at the Newport Open, second round at Acapulco and now has come through the qualifiers here in Indian Wells to beat Maria Sakkari and Anatasia Pavlyuchenkova to make it round three.
Her rankings will improve even more given she was a first round casualty here last year but the big question is if she has the wherewithal to push Venus.
