Pedro Martinez v Jozef Kovalik Head to Head
Their only ATP top level meeting came in Kitzbuhel in 2021 and Martinez had won it. On two previous occasions on the Challenger circuit, Martinez and Kovalik won one match apiece.

Martinez had made a strong start to the season by reaching the quarterfinal of the Pune Open but since stumbled a bit. Sure there was a semifinal appearance at the Girona Challenger more recently but at the highest level, Martinez has hardly won anything.
In fact, his victory count on the main draws of ATP competitions reads a mere two following that Pune Open showing.
And since reaching the semifinal in Girona, he has lost three in a row. First he went down to Gastao Elias in the semifinal there despite starting out a 8/11 favourite in that encounter.
He was then beaten by Pavel Kotov in the first round of the Marrakesh Open and then crashed out of the Monte-Carlo Masters qualifiers at the hands of Oscar Otte. Can he now turn things around here?

Kovalik Struggling Through the Season
Kovalik was once ranked 80th in the world but has fallen to 155th at the moment thanks to a continuous run of poor form. And that form has continued this season with Kovalik barely winning anything at any level.
In fact, his successive wins in the qualifiers to make the opening round of this tournament in Barcelona was the first time Kovalik has won back to back matches at any level.
That speaks volumes about how the situation has gone for the Slovakian player given that five of the tournaments he’s played this season have been on the Challenger circuit.
Once before this, Kovalik had made the third round of this tournament. He had started out as a lucky loser who got a bye into the second round before defeating Guido Pella to enter round three.
