2019 Munich Open champion Cristian Garin will begin his 2023 campaign against a qualifier on Tuesday.
The Chilean will be making his third appearance in the tournament. He had won the title on his tournament debut by beating Matteo Berrettini in the final. Last year, he was knocked out in the first round by Alejandro Tabilo.
The 26-year-old comes to Munich with a 10-8 season record on the tour and an overall record of 17-9 in 2023.
Garin, who was very inconsistent last season, didn’t start off the new season well, but has found form in the last three tournaments that he has played in.
First, he went from the qualifiers to the round of 16 in Indian Wells. Then he went from qualifiers to the third round in Miami. In his most recent tournament, Garin reached the quarterfinals in Houston, before falling to Tomás Martín Etcheverry.

Topo Qualifies for First Main Draw of the Season
Nineteen-year-old Marko Topo held off the Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva in a three-set contest on Sunday to qualify for his first tour level main draw of the season.
Topo, who saved 6 of 11 break points in the match, had 25 opportunities to break Kopriva’s serve and he took six of them to sink the world no. 169, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the second qualifying round.
The German player had won his first qualifying round against Shintaro Mochizuki, beating the Japanese player 6-3, 6-4.
The two wins in the qualifying rounds were his first two wins of the season. Topo had lost all five of his previous matches played at the Challenger and ITF levels.
Ranked no. 474th in the world, the German will hope to put up a fight on his home turf. He has played three tour level matches before but is yet to register a win.
