Alejandro Davidovich Fokina v Tomas Etcheverry Head to Head

Fokina and Etcheverry have never faced off before this.

Fokina Makes Poor Start on Clay

Having risen to a career-best ranking of 24th in the world earlier this season, Fokina’s last three results, including two on clay, haven’t been up to the mark. And that has seen him fall to 38th on the ATP charts as a result of that.

Following a quarterfinal appearance at the Indian Wells Masters, Fokina was ousted by Tommy Paul in the third round in Miami. And while he then entered the clay court swing with a relatively happy knack of making deep runs in competitions this season, Fokina hasn’t done a lot in the two tournaments he’s played.

At the first in Estoril, he went down to 7/2 underdog Marco Cecchinato in the second round while the Monte-Carlo Masters saw him lose in the very first round to Karen Khachanov.

While Khachanov is a solid player, a crushing 6-2, 6-2 loss to the Russian would have been a bitter pill to swallow.

And that being the case, it would be difficult for Fokina to now ensure he starts off a favourite in his own mind against his Argentine opponent.

Etcheverry at His Career-Best Ranking

Like his opponent here, even Etcheverry is having a good season overall and that’s reflecting in his ATP Rankings too. Etcheverry has a 11-5 record on clay which has boosted it up to his career-best ranking of 59th.

The 11th of those wins came in the first round here when Etcheverry routed Pablo Andujar in a little over two hours to set up a meeting with Fokina.

Etcheverry did have trouble with his own serving as he was broken once in the first set and twice in the second, but found a way out both times. In the first, Etcheverry overcame a loss of serve in the very first game to break Andujar three times and ease past him.

The second set became more of a challenge for Etcheverry as he frittered away a 2-0 lead to see Andujar serve for the set at 5-4. He broke Andujar twice in a row after that to clinch the win and march ahead.

Things could get tougher against Fokina but on clay, Etcheverry might hold the edge.

Fokina v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip

While Fokina is a favourite, Etcheverry will be no pushover on this surface and with some luck might even edge out his opponent.
