Alexei Popyrin v Alex Molcan Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Popyrin and Molcan.

Popyrin Scrapes Past Griekspoor

He was a distant 7/5 to go past Tallon Griekspoor in his opening round encounter but Popyrin did just that to make it to the second round for the fifth tournament in a row.

In fact, off the nine ATP tournaments he’s played this season, Popyrin has reached the second round on all but two occasions. At the Australian Open, he had made the third round as well.

Here against Griekspoor, Popyrin was on court for two hours and 14 minutes as he made it through to the next stage with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) victory. What was interesting to watch was neither player was broken despite there being a total of 10 break-points on offer.

In fact Popyrin had seven chances to get the better of his opponent’s serve but missed all of them, even as he saved three of his own.

Can he now make it two in two on a surface he doesn’t quite enjoy?

Molcan Shrugs off Slow Start against Daniel

Taro Daniel was 2-0 up in the opening set of his first round match against Molcan and would soon go on to break his opponent again to win the set. He would then take a 3-0 lead in the second and looked like he was on his way to winning it easily before Molcan mounted his comeback.

In two hours and 41 minutes, Molcan managed to overcome Daniel, winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to scrape through to the second round.

Down a break in the second, Molcan then forged ahead with successive breaks of serve but lost his serve again – for the fourth and the last time in the match. From that point on, he served for the set at 6-5 and frittered away five set-points before grabbing the equaliser.

And in the decider, Molcan stormed away with three more breaks of serves while saving two break-points to win it.

This win comes on the back of a third round entry at the Miami Open and another third round showing in Indian Wells as well. Can he make it two wins in a row for the third time in a row?

Popyrin v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose between these players according to the bookmakers but with a 22-10 career win-loss record on clay, Molcan does hold a better history on this surface.
