Shapovalov in Maiden Clay Court Match for 2023

Shapovalov switches over to clay following a disappointing start to the season in which he has won just six of the 13 matches he’s played.

In fact the Canadian player had started things off well with a couple of successive wins at both, the Adelaide International and the Australian Open. Losses to Novak Djokovic and Hubert Hurkacz were par for the course there, sure, but what has followed would have been slightly off-putting.

In three of the five tournaments that Shapovalov has played, he has been knocked out in the first round itself.

And at the other two, in Acapulco and Miami, Shapovalov has managed to win a round but crashed out in the second. Defeats Wu Yibing, Michael Mmoh and Ugo Humbert would have particularly.

Moving to clay now would be rather difficult given the world number 28th player’s overall record on this surface has been anything but excellent.

Qualifier Kovalik Surprises Martinez

Kovalik hadn’t won a main draw match at the highest level this season coming into the Barcelona Open. In fact in a career that has lasted 13 years so far, Kovalik has won just 15 matches at the highest level.

His 16th came in the first round against Pedro Martinez despite starting out a 6/4 underdog in the encounter.

In a match lasting two hours and 53 minutes, Kovalik overcame a poor second set to win 7-5, 2-6, 7-5. Rather interestingly, both players dropped their respective serves a whopping seven times.

The difference was in the timing of those lost serves with Kovalik managing to hold on to his own at crucial junctures while breaking his opponent at that time. Serving to stay in the set in the first and in the match in the third, Martinez was broken both times which allowed Kovalik to make it through.

Shapovalov v Kovalik Prediction and Tip

Can Shapovalov shrug off his poor form for the season and under-par results on clay overall to make it through here? He should be able to do that but might take some time to get going.
