Iga Swiatek v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Swiatek has won them both. One of them came on the clay courts of the 2022 French Open. Zheng has taken Swiatek to a third set in both those matches.

Swiatek Hasn’t Played for a Month

A rib injury at the Indian Wells Open made play difficult for Swiatek in the semifinals of that tournament and she crashed out of the competition, losing to Elena Rybakina.

She would later go on to pull out of the Miami Open as well because of the same injury and now returns to the circuit after one month of inaction.

A winner of this tournament in the 2022 edition, Swiatek returns to a familiar place. Not just because of the title victory but also the fact that the Polish player has had a good time on clay and prefers this surface over the rest (despite her excellent record in hardcourt competitions too).

A two-time French Open champion, Swiatek has struggled just that little bit in 2023 with a win-loss record of 16-4. Now while on its own that makes for pretty good reading, one must also keep that in context with her 2022 showing when she won 70 of her 80 singles matches.

Can she start things off confidently against a player who has tested her in the past?

Zheng Runs Over Parks

Having bowed out of the competition in the qualifiers, Alycia Parks got a second chance when she qualified for the main draw as a lucky loser. Unfortunately for her, she proved to be no match for Zheng, who won the opening encounter in straight sets.

Zheng claimed a place in the second round 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted an hour and 42 minutes.

Featuring in her first clay-court match of the season, Zheng faced just one break-point in the match and saved it easily while getting past Parks’ serve once apiece in the two sets.

She will now hope she can use some of this confidence going up against the world number one but the one thing in Qinwen’s favour is her own performance on clay. The Chinese player has won a WTA 125 title on clay and four of her other eight ITF tournament wins have also been on this surface.

Will all of that count though?

Swiatek v Zheng Prediction and Tip

What makes this an intriguing contest is how Swiatek has not been at her best, is coming after a one-month hiatus and Zheng has a good record on clay. All said and done though, Swiatek should still be a heavy favourite to finish this off in two sets.
