Jannik Sinner v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings and Sinner has won them both. The more recent one of the two came last week at the Monte-Carlo Masters where Schwartzman was down a set and 3-1 in the second when he retired from the contest.

Sinner Impressed at Monte-Carlo

Sinner was at his usual best even as the action moved to clay for the first time for the Italian number one.

After he had demolished Diego Schwartzman in the second round, wins over Hubert Hurkacz and Lorenzo Musetti helped him make the semifinal. And there it looked like he would have defeated Holger Rune too when he grabbed the first set with ease but couldn’t close out the match.

In the end, he lost in three sets, going down 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 to Rune but his overall performance in the tournament would have pleased Sinner.

This had followed a semifinal appearance at the Indian Wells Masters and a final in Miami, making it three Masters 1000 tournaments in a row where he has reached at least the last four stage.

Currently ranked eighth in the world, a distant run in this tournament will go a long way in helping Sinner claw his way up into the top five.

Schwartzman Sends Wu Packing

Wu Yibing had surprised the tennis world earlier this season with a title win at the Dallas Open. But that was a quicker, indoor court and on clay, things aren’t quite the same.

Now Schwartzman has always done his best on dirt but his form has suggested that things have gone horribly wrong for him recently. In fact going into this opener in Barcelona, the Argentine had won a mere four matches all season.

Which is why a 6-2, 6-2 win over Yibing in a mere hour and 20 minutes would have given Schwartzman a lot of cheer. Sure he was broken once but that came with the score reading 6-2, 5-0 in his favour and with the match having long slipped away from his opponent’s grasp.

Now coming up against Sinner, things would be a lot different but the Argentine would be breathing slightly more easily than he must have when he had lost five successive first round matches on clay this season.

Sinner v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip

While Schwartzman’s performance in the first round was solid, he would still find it difficult to hold a candle to Sinner and a straight-set win looks likely for the Italian player.
