Stefanos Tsitsipas v Denis Shapovalov Preview
Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas eased into the third round of the Barcelona Open with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Argentina’s Pedro Cachín on Wednesday.
The Greek, who finished runner-up in 2018 and 2021, was a quarterfinalist last year. He didn’t face a single break point against Cachin and converted all three of the break points that he held to win the match in an hour and 19 minutes.
The Greek improved his season record to 17-5 with the win. He was a finalist at the Australian Open this year, but has seen a dip in form since then, reaching just one more quarterfinal and that was in Monte-Carlo last week, where he lost to Taylor Fritz. Can Tsitsipas reach back-to-back quarterfinals with a win on Thursday?
His opponent, however, will have the psychological edge going into the contest as Denis Shapovalov holds a 3-1 head-to-head record against the Greek. The Canadian served 13 aces on his way to a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jozef Kovalik on Wednesday.
The 14th seed saved 7 of 7 break points that he faced and he converted 2 of 3 during the one hour and 21 minute contest.
Shapovalov is 7-7 in 2023. He had a decent start down under but he had won just two matches in the last five tournaments. Although he has a superior record against the world no. 5, Tsisipas will have the edge in this contest.

Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 2/3 (bet365)
Jannik Sinner v Yoshihito Nishioka Preview
Fourth seed Jannik Sinner battled past Diego Schwartzman in the second round on Wednesday. The world no. 8 needed an hour and 40 minutes to oust the Argentine 6-2, 6-4.
The 21-year-old Italian converted 6 of 9 break points and saved 5 of 8 to oust the world no. 48 and register his 25th tour level victory of the season. Sinner won the title in Montpellier and finished runner-up in Rotterdam and Miami. He was also a semifinalist in Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo.
This is the second time that he is playing in Barcelona. He was a semifinalist in 2021.
Sinner will be meeting Yoshihito Nishioka for the first time in his career. The Japanese player began his campaign with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over David Goffin in the second round.
Ranked no. 35, Nishioka needed just an hour and 16 minutes to dispatch the Belgian. The victory ended a four-match losing streak for the 16th seed, who had last won a match in the first round of the Delray Beach Open in February. Nishioka is 9-6 this season, having had a decent run down under, with a semifinal finish in Adelaide and a fourth round finish at the Australian Open.
He doesn’t have a great record on clay and will find the going tough against the fourth seed.

Cameron Norrie v Lorenzo Musetti Preview
Seventh seed Cameron Norrie will be meeting ninth seed Lorenzo Musetti for the first time.
The British left-hander handed Russian qualifier Pavel Kotov a straight sets shellacking in the second round on Wednesday. The world no. 13 Norrie saved all four break points in the match and converted 4 of 9 break points that he held to score a 6-1, 6-2 victory in an hour and 14 minutes.
Norrie is in incredible form this season, particularly on clay. He has featured in three finals, winning the title in Rio (his fifth of his career) and finishing runner-up in Auckland and Buenos Aires. He is 22-6 this season and 9-2 on clay. He will be aiming to reach a third straight quarterfinal in Barcelona.
Just like Norrie, Musetti, too, eased past his second round opponent on Wednesday, ousting Australia’s Jason Kubler 6-3, 6-1.
The Italian, who was struggling for consistency ever since a bright start at the United Cup, found form in Monte-Carlo, where he beat Novak Djokovic en route the quarterfinals.
Musetti is in the round of 16 for the second time in Barcelona and will be hoping to make a last eight debut with a win on Thursday.
Cameron Norrie v Lorenzo Musetti Tip
Three sets in the match: 4/6 (bet365)
Alex de Minaur v Grigor Dimitrov Preview
Eighth seed Alex de Minaur demolished Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko in the second round on Wednesday.
The Australian bagelled the 22-year-old Russian in the first set and then broke him three more times for a comprehensive 6-0, 6-1 victory in 65 minutes.
Ranked no. 19 in the world, the 24-year-old Aussie is looking to reach the quarterfinals for the second time in Barcelona. He was a semifinalist in 2022 and had made it to the round of 16 in 2021.
De Minaur is in terrific form in 2023. He won his first ATP 500 title and a seventh title overall in Acapulco this year. Having got off to a great start in Barcelona he will hope to keep that going in the third round where he faces the 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian had dispatched world no. 120 Emilio Gomez of Eciuador 6-3, 6-1 in just 64 minutes.
The world no. 31 Dimitrov was a quarterfinalist in Barcelona in 2018, but has fallen in the round of 16 in his last two appearances in 2019 and 2022. Can he reach the last eight this year?
He has not won consecutive matches ever since reaching the semifinals in Rotterdam and that includes four tournaments in between. Expect a close contest on Thursday.
