Andrey Rublev v Damir Dzumhur Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two and Rublev has won every single time. Only one previous meeting had come on clay and that was way back in 2015.

Rublev Resumes with a Rout

Having won his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title last week in Monte-Carlo, Rublev resumed his quest for clay court glory with an easy second round win. He scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Juan Pablo Varillas in a matter of an hour and 10 minutes to march into the quarterfinal.

Following his tournament victory on Sunday where he had beaten Holger Rune, Rublev got himself a three-day break to recover from a gruelling competition and that looked to have helped him.

He managed to break his opponent twice in both the sets even as he saved the two break-points he faced – both of which came in the second set when he led 4-1. Soon after he was serving for the match which he did to love to register his sixth successive win on clay. Rublev is yet to lose a match on this surface in 2023.

What makes this an even more special win is Varillas is no mug on clay, with the Peruvian player having made the semifinal of the Buenos Aires Open earlier this season as a qualifier. Rublev should continue to make it through here.

Dzumhur Makes it Two Shocks in a Row

Once ranked in the top 25 on the ATP charts, Dzumhur has fallen away dramatically and is ranked outside the top 200. He wouldn’t have been playing on the ATP circuit had it not been for the wildcard he got from his home tournament organisers but has he made it count or what!

Going into his first round match against Liam Broady as a 11/10 underdog, Dzumhur had crushed his British opponent 6-3, 6-0.

And when he faced Richard Gasquet, Dzumhur was 9/5 to win it and that’s exactly what he did. The world number 202 carved out a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (3) victory over his veteran opponent to make it to the quarterfinal.

While the match lasted two hours and 43 minutes as you would expect, Dzumhur managed to shrug off the two breaks of serve he faced in the second set and the 3-1 deficit in the third to claim his place in the last eight.

And while Rublev would be an improbable proposition, Dzumhur wouldn’t one bit featuring this late in an ATP tournament.

Rublev v Dzumhur Prediction and Tip

Other than exhaustion cannot see Rublev drop a set here.
