Swiatek Eases Past Zheng

Top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek began her clay season with a straight sets win over China’s Qinwen Zheng in the second round on Thursday.

The Pole, who is playing for the first time since her semifinal defeat to Elena Rybakina in Indian Wells last month, needed an hour and 27 minutes to beat the world no. 25, 6-1, 6-4.

The world no. 1 won 84% points on the back of her first serve and was broken just once in the match, while she converted half of the eight break points that she held to begin her title defence in Stuttgart, where she beat Aryna Sabalenka in the final last year.

With the win, Swiatek improved her season record to 17-4. She has featured in two finals this season, winning her 12th career title in Doha and finishing runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova in Dubai. Swiatek will be hoping to reach a fourth semifinal of the season with a win on Friday.

Pliskova Edges Past Vekic

2018 Stuttgart champion Karolina Pliskova battled past Donna Vekic in three sets in the second round on Thursday.

In an up-and-down contest, the world no. 17 Pliskova dominated the opening set, however, Vekic clawed her way back into the contest to take the second set in the tiebreak.

Neither player could break each other in the final set, which was also decided in the tiebreak. Pliskova built a 6-3 lead but conceded back to back minibreaks to allow Vekic back in the set, however, she got the next point on Vekic’s serve and sealed the match 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5) in two hours and 23 minutes.

The Czech player had begun her Stuttgart campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 win over eighth seed Maria Sakkari.

Pliskova is 18-7 across levels this year. This is the third time that she has reached the quarterfinals this year and will be aiming to make the final four for the first time in 2023.

Swiatek v Pliskova Prediction and Tip
