Jaume Munar v Thanasi Kokkinakis Head to Head

Munar and Kokkinakis have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Munar 6-6 on Clay This Season

While consistency in results hasn’t quite been Munar’s forte, he will be reasonably satisfied with his clay court showings this season. More so because Munar has really struggled to get outside of clay.

The Spaniard has lost all five of his matches in hardcourt competitions, losing in the first round at Pune, Auckland, Melbourne, Indian Wells and Miami in 2023.

Which is playing in clay-court tournaments would have been such a breather for Munar. That’s where he won his first match of the year as he defeated Guido Pella in Buenos Aires and then went all the way through to the semifinals in Santiago.

In fact wins over Alejandro Tabilo, Lorenzo Musetti and Thaigo Monteiro in that tournament would have been a confidence-booster.

Since then, Munar has not made the second round in any of the clay-court competitions he’s played in, losing in the second at Marrakesh and Monte-Carlo and going down in the opener at Barcelona.

Can he turn things around against his Aussie opponent?

Kokkinakis Resumes after Miami

While Kokkinakis will be rather pleased with how he has gone about his business so far this season, a shift to clay would test him to the hilt.

First the good bit – and Kokkinakis had made the semifinal at the Adelaide International earlier this year and followed it up with a title win on the Challenger circuit, and second round appearances at Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami Masters.

His career record changes drastically on clay though.

The Aussie has featured in just one edition in Madrid and that came eight years ago. He was beaten in the first round. And his relation with clay hasn’t changed too much what with Kokkinakis having not featured in any of the dirt-based tournaments this season.

Can he kick-start his clay court campaign for the season with a solid showing?

Munar v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, Munar is 1/1 to win this and on clay we would have to give him a better chance given his Aussie opponent hasn’t played a match so far on this surface this season.
