Roberto Carballes Baena v David Goffin Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two at the highest level and one other match on the Challenger circuit. Goffin has won three of them but on clay they are 1-1. They last played in Marrakesh last year and Goffin had won it in three.

Carballes Baena Hit Career-Best Ranking Recently
His most recent result might not have been his best in the business but Carballes Baena has also had a lot to boast about in recent times.
The Spaniard was ranked 84th in the world at one point this season – which was also his lowest ranking of the year – before he came into the Marrakesh Open. And there, Carballes Baena overcame Tallon Griekspoor, Dan Evans and Alexandre Muller to win only his second career title on the ATP circuit.
That propelled his ranking into the top 50 for the first time in his career.
Carballes Baena would have been expected to do a lot better at the Monte-Carlo Masters that followed but he fell to an opening round of Marcos Giron.
Here again, Carballes Baena starts off against a player who has beaten him on multiple occasions in the past and that could be a concern. On clay, however, and with the kind of form that Carballes Baena has shown, it could give the Spaniard a slight edge.
Interesting to note that Carballes Baena has never progressed beyond the first round here.

Goffin 1-2 on Clay This Season
It hasn’t been the best of starts to the clay court swing for Goffin after he stumbled to a first round loss at the Monte-Carlo Masters and then went down in the second round in Barcelona.
Goffin lost to Diego Schwartzman in Monte-Carlo and while that doesn’t seem to be that big a deal given the difference between these rankings, it must be quickly added that Schwartzman has done nothing of note this season. Schwartzman is 2-7 on clay for 2023.
At Barcelona, Goffin was sent packing by Yoshihito Nishioka. Again, it was Goffin who had started off as a favourite in the match but was shredded apart by his Japanese opponent.
What now needs to be seen is if Goffin can raise the bar against a player whose form has been up and down in the past but comes into this tournament with a title win under his belt recently.
Carballes Baena v Goffin Prediction and Tip
Carballes Baena starts off a favourite and at 8/11 we think those are tempting odds to go with for the Spaniard’s victory. Not sure if this would even go to a third.
