Maryna Zanevska was a semifinalist in Lyon this year, but her quarterfinal win in that tournament in on February 3 remains the last time she had won a competitive match this season.

The Belgian has an overall record of 6-7 this season. She will be hoping to gain some momentum as she gets ready to play her first clay court tournament of 2023.

Zanevska plays her best tennis on clay and record prove that. Last year, the 29-year-old had a 13-9 record across levels on the surface, while in 2021, she finished with a 26-7 record on clay, which included her maiden WTA title at the Poland Open.

Kenin Looking Better This Season

World no. 134 Sofia Kenin has shown signs of improvement this season.

The 2020 Australian Open winner had struggled with form and injury over the last two years as a result of which she had fallen out of top 300 last year. But this year has been different for the 24-year-old, who brings a 9-9 record to Madrid.

Kenin was a semifinalist in Hobart and made it to the third round in Miami. The American defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her last tournament in Charleston but fell in the next round to Irina Begu.

Kenin’s a good player on clay and she showed that in 2020 when she made it to the final of the French Open. But she could not capture a second Grand Slam title, going down to Iga Swiatek.

A 5-time champion from seven finals, Kenin will be making her second appearance in Madrid. She is yet to win a main draw match in the tournament.

Kenin was dominant in this year’s win over the Belgian. She has been in better form than Zanevska and is expected to start off her Madrid campaign with a win.
