This has been something of a breakthrough season for Masarova, who began the year ranked 130 in the world, but has risen more than fifty places since then. Her stature in the game was boosted by reaching her first WTA final in Auckland as a qualifier, losing eventually losing to Coco Gauff.

Since then, Masarova’s best result on the main tour came in  Linz, where again she came through the qualifying competition to make the second round.

However, she comes to Madrid with renewed confidence, just have made the final of an ITF event on clay in Portugal, where she claimed some notable scalps along the way, including Clara Tauson, Sara Errani and Mayar Sherif.

This will be the first time she has appeared in the main draw of this tournament, which is a home event for her.

Bucsa Won Lyon Doubles

Unlike her opponent, Bucsa has played in this tournament before, but only in the qualifying competition and she failed to get beyond the first round of that last year.

However, she is already a WTA winner this year, having won the first senior title of her career in the doubles in Lyon, where she was partnered by Bibiane Shoofs.

In terms of singles, Bucsa’s best result came at the Australian Open where she came through qualifying to make the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career, before eventually losing to Iga Swiatek.

Most recently she appeared in Stuttgart, where again she was forced to qualify first.

However, having done so, she beat Tamara Korpatsch in the first round, before suffering a straight sets defeat at the hands of another Spaniard, Paula Badosa.

Masarova v Bucsa Prediction and Tip

Neither woman has played in the main draw of this tournament before, so it will be a new experience for both of them.

On paper and ranking, they appear very evenly matched, so there is no obvious winner in this match. However, Bucsa may just have the edge because she has been playing at this level longer.
